Nigel founded Chilasa Venture Philanthropy in 2012 to research and develop an ecosystem approach to accelerate the growth of rural micro and small enterprises (MSME) in Tamil Nadu, India. Following a successful two year live market test he founded Chilasa SA, to commercialize and scale the business model focusing on the solid wood furniture value chain. Based in Chennai, Chilasa has a network of over 8’000 rural entrepreneurs and artisans and is the first to achieve FSC sub-contractor status for micro enterprises in India, as well as the first to launch a carpenter app in the local language to integrate the supply-chain and communication process. The company is in the initial stage of launching it’s mission driven brand Calyah in collaboration with leading international designers and building out direct to consumer marketing channels in Europe.
Previously Nigel was a strategy and management consultant working internationally with family offices, foundations, United Nations agencies, and multi-national companies at the interface of business, social transformation, and investing. Earlier in his career Nigel spent eight years as a social entrepreneur pioneering social enterprise and community based solutions to urban poverty in inner-London.
Nigel has a MBA from the University of Liverpool with a concentration on international marketing and entrepreneurship. He is a British national and has a Swedish wife and three daughters.
